Level I Training

Chief Joseph Middle School:  Gym and Fields  4255 Kimberwicke, Bozeman, MT  59718

 

8:00 – 8:30  Registration in gym

 

8:30 Opening and welcome: Bonnie Sacatello-Sawyer, Hopa Mountain. Prayer: Richard Horn (Blackfeet) Int. Traditional Games Society. Introductions of participants.

 

9:30  Opening of Blanket Ceremony & introduction to the history, culture, and events of the research, resurrection, and restoration of Plains Indian games to Montana tribes.

 

10:30 Rotation: Games of skill, chance, and intuition.

In gymnasium: four stations:  1.  Sticks in Fist (Intuition & probability) and Tie Up

 2. Rock in Fist (observation & intuition)  3. Dice Game (chance & observation) 

 4. Guessing Sticks (estimation) & Guessing Rocks (estimation)

 

11:45 Lunch on your own

 

1:15

Inside in gym   1. Feather Darts (observation, knowledge of feathers, eye-hand coordination ) 2.Tops (skill & knowledge of how tops work).

Outside gym back door on grass area  3.  Y- arrow game (throwing for accuracy and 4. Hoop & Stake (throwing skill for accuracy).

 

2:30 – 2:45 Break

Inside the gym: 1. Stone House (speed, coordination, dexterity, observation in patterns, and imagination) 2. Ring the Stick (manual dexterity & hand eye coordination) and Ring & Pin (manual dexterity & eye-hand coordination

Outside gym back door on grass area: 3. Make the Stick Jump (Throwing skill for power and short distance accuracy)   4.  Kickball Racing (speed & eye-foot coordination) and Run & Scream (lung capacity & running ability)

 

3:45 p.m. 1. Grass & Snow Snakes (Strength and throwing technique) 2. Atlatl Casing   3. Shinney  4 .Doubleball

 

 

5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.  Dinner on your own

 

6:30 p.m.– 8:30 p.m. Crafting Game Equipment

 

Friday, October 16

  

 

8:30 to 11:45 Crafting

 

11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. Lunch on your own

 

1:15 – 3:30 p.m.   Finish Crafting  ( get instructor signature on finished items)

 

4:00 – Two stations of lecture: A.  Richard Horn and Assistant: “The Culture and Traditions of Indian Games     B.  DeeAnna Brady-Leader: “Using the Traditional Games Concepts in Modern Education.

 

5:00 – Dinner on own

 

6:30 – Participants go to the other station:  A.  Richard Horn and Assistant: “The Culture and Traditions of Indian Games     B.  DeeAnna Brady-Leader and Assistant: “Using the Traditional Games Concepts in Modern Education.

 

7:30 – Preparation for the Clinic Test.

 

8:00 – Clinic test for Level I certification and closing comments
